The Spokesman-Review recently hosted a successful Active Senior Living Expo, bringing together seniors, families, and industry professionals to explore regional resources geared especially toward people ages 55 and up. During the event, Lisa Egger, Director of Sales and Marketing at Riverview Retirement Community, presented an informative session in the Willow Room titled “Understanding Life Plan Communities and Preparing for Retirement Living.”
The presentation focused on helping seniors and their families better understand the many senior living options available today, and why planning ahead is one of the most important steps before a health crisis forces a decision. Lisa explained how a Life Plan Community, also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), provides a continuum of care that supports residents through every stage of aging. These communities offer independent living along with priority access to assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, therapy, and wellness services, allowing residents to age in place with confidence and peace of mind. The presentation compares traditional independent living at home versus living in a retirement community, highlighting benefits such as maintenance-free living, chef-prepared meal plans, security, housekeeping, social opportunities, and stronger community connections. It also explains the difference between rental communities and buy-in communities, where residents pay an upfront entrance fee that may later be partially refunded.
A major theme throughout the presentation was the importance of researching and touring senior living communities early. Planning ahead allows older adults to fully enjoy community amenities, build meaningful relationships, and make thoughtful decisions about their future lifestyle and care needs. Lisa emphasizes that downsizing and moving are easier when done proactively, rather than during a medical emergency. Those looking are advised to consider location, lifestyle, amenities, care services, financial stability, and long-term affordability when choosing a community. Practical retirement planning tips include meeting with financial advisors and realtors, updating legal documents like Power of Attorney, and organizing financial information.
The second half of the presentation focused on higher levels of care, including assisted living, skilled nursing, memory care, and in-home care services. Lisa discussed common signs that someone may need additional support, such as frequent hospitalization, social withdrawal, increased dependence on family, safety concerns, or cognitive decline. Attendees also learned how assisted living communities, in-home care, adult family homes, skilled nursing facilities, and memory care communities differ in staffing, care services, environment, and cost.
Throughout the session, attendees were encouraged to tour senior living communities in person, ask detailed questions about staffing, finances, and care practices, and prepare for emergencies before they occur. Lisa emphasized that proactive planning, education, and building relationships with trusted communities can significantly reduce stress for both seniors and their families while improving long-term quality of life.
Riverview Retirement Community was honored to participate in the Active Senior Living Expo and remains committed to helping seniors navigate retirement living with confidence, compassion, and clarity.
