Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes: Understanding the Difference

When families begin exploring senior living options, one of the most common questions is: “What’s the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?” While both provide important support for older adults, the two serve very different purposes. At Riverview Retirement Community, we want to clear up the confusion and share how assisted living supports independence while providing peace of mind.

Assisted living is designed for individuals who are largely independent, but may require some assistance with daily activities. This may include help with bathing, dressing, medication management, or meal preparation. Residents live in private apartments, enjoy restaurant-style dining, and have access to social events, wellness programs, fitness classes, and outings. Each resident has the comfort of knowing they can remain in their apartment throughout every stage of life, with care that adapts to their changing needs – from light support to heavy assistance, and even to hospice care. As long as they are safe in their home for extended periods and do not need complex medical care that requires skilled nursing, they can continue enjoying the familiarity and security of their own space. Assisted living emphasizes independence, comfort, and quality of life while ensuring support is available when needed. All of this combined creates a more welcoming community environment for our residents.

Nursing homes, by contrast, are medical facilities for people who need 24-hour skilled nursing care. These settings are appropriate for individuals with advanced medical needs or chronic conditions requiring ongoing supervision and treatment. The primary focus in nursing homes is medical care and monitoring, rather than maintaining independence.

At Riverview, our assisted living community offers the comforts of home with the reassurance that help is always nearby. We believe retirement should be about enjoying life, staying connected, and living with confidence. We are committed to helping residents maintain their independence, enjoy an engaging lifestyle, and have the peace of mind that assistance is always close at hand.
